[Middleton] The Coalition for America’s Families (CFAF) announced a radio advertising campaign in Milwaukee, starting Monday, alerting Milwaukee Families to the impending threat facing Milwaukee’s School Choice Program. “Without the Governor’s support, thousands of Milwaukee children will be sentenced to a failing Public School System where two-thirds don’t graduate,” said CFAF President Steve King.
Earlier this month the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) released their plans for rationing the existing spots in the program. If the current enrollment cap stays in place, up to 4,000 students will lose seats in schools they have chosen and dozens of schools will face the prospect of closing. Three times Governor Doyle has vetoed bills that would have lifted the caps on the program.
“Governor Doyle has been playing with the very lives and fortunes of Milwaukee’s poorest children, and his failure to act will force up to 4,000 kids out of their current choice school. What’s more, dozens of schools will face the prospect of closing. We urge the governor to avert this crisis for Milwaukee’s children by lifting the cap,” said King.
The Milwaukee Choice program is a system where families at 175% of the federal poverty rate, or less, are given a voucher to enroll their child at the school of their choice. A study by the Manhattan Institute found that while Milwaukee Public High Schools only graduate 36% of students, 64% of former MPS students enrolled in choice schools graduate.”
The ad, called Schoolhouse Door, was produced by Mikel Holt, editor and associate publisher of the Milwaukee Community Journal, and WTMJ talk show host Charlie Sykes with students from MessmerHigh School in Milwaukee. It aired on Sykes radio show last week. CFAF purchased the ad and will air it on WNOV-AM, WMCS-AM, and WJMR-FM in Milwaukee.

50 years ago the Supreme Court opened the school house doors. But the fight hasn't been
easy and the fight isn't over
In 1957 a governor named Orville Faubus stood in the school house door in
Little Rock
,
Arkansas
to keep nine African American
students from getting an education
In 1963 a governor named George Wallace stood in the school house door at the University of Alabama to keep two African American Students from going to School
Now in 2006 don't let a governor named Jim Doyle stand in the school house door, again, this time blocking hundreds of African American students right here in Milwaukee
Students who just want a chance
A chance to go the school of their choice
If governor Doyle doesn't lift the cap on school choice he'll be standing in the school house Doyle just as surely as governor governor Faubus and Governor Wallace
Governor Doyle let our people Go
Governor Doyle let our people in
Governor Doyle let our children learn
Governor Doyle get out of the School House Door!
